Event Details
In celebration of the iconic Macy's Day Parade, families are invited to participate in a special program to celebrate the life of Tony Sarg, the puppeteer who first brought the parade to life.
Attend Storytime at 10:30am on Saturday, November 1st to hear a special reading of Balloons Over Broadway by Melissa Sweet. This beautiful picture book describes the magical life of Tony Sarg, a Guatemalan immigrant who used his amazing imagination to construct the giant balloon floats used in the first Macy's Day Parade. His genius creations have served as the inspiration that continue to amaze viewers every year since the parade premiered in 1924.
Families are then invited to take home a kit to create their own miniature parade float. These kits are available on a first come, first served basis and will contain basic supplies to construct a float. Families are encouraged to be as creative as they wish! Floats should be no larger than 12 inches wide, 12 inches high, and 8 inches deep so as to fit on the library shelves. Bring your miniature float back before 5pm on Saturday, November 15th. Floats will be put on display in our youth area for the public to enjoy and admire. Families who wish to claim their float can do so during the week of December 1st through December 6th.
Balloons Over Broadway is available to download on Hoopla. You may also view a reading of it by typing "Balloons Over Broadway" into YouTube.
