Event Details

Join the library and the City of Brookings for annual event celebrating the life of Academy Award winner and Brookings resident Elmo Williams;  producer, director, editor and writer of many Hollywood classic movies, including "High Noon", "Tora! Tora! Tora!", "The Longest Yard", and "20,000 Leagues under the Sea".

Since its official proclamation in 2017, the fourth Sunday in April has been designated as “Elmo Williams Day” in Brookings. Williams is Brookings' own Hollywood celebrity, having won two academy awards for film editing in 1953 and 1955.

This year it will be celebrated on Sunday, April 27, starting with a tribute to Williams at noon at the Capella by the Sea in Azalea Park. It will be followed by a free screening of "The Amazing Adventure" at the Chetco Community Public Library in Brookings.

"The Amazing Adventure" gave iconic actor Cary Grant his first starring role and marked Elmo's first editing of a major motion picture. It will be followed by a taped interview of Elmo talking about the making of the film, the stars in it, and the early days of the British film industry.
